But this glorious destination has so much more to offer than many poeple realize—far more than one can do in a single day trip. Cancun is perhaps the most luxurious destination in the Mexican Caribbean, offering guests all the finer things in life and much more, including everything from slow- to fast-paced action. Among this cultural treasure is a rich history of the ancient Mayan culture and archaeology that can really fire up your family vacation or romantic getaway. Exploring Cancun’s Rich Culture

Visit the Museo INAH, which hosts 47 showcases of jewelry, masks, skulls and even a hieroglyphic staircase dating all the way back to the 6th century. You’ll also find Mayan ruins at the tranquil Yamil Lu’um and in the Zona Arqueológica El Rey. For adventure enthusiasts, The Xcaret theme park also hosts exhibits on Mayan culture, but you can also partake in rafting expeditions through the surrounding jungles and myriad of flora and fauna. You can also take in the most awe-inspiring view of the Chacmochuc Lagoon after a trek up to the top of the highest pyramid at the ruins of El Meco. For some really red-hot action, you can also witness one of Mexico’s oldest traditions, the bullfight (not recommended for young children), or check out the Mexican rodeo at the Plaza del Toros downtown. You can also relax and watch the folkloric ballet at the Continental Villas Plaza, where the Ballet Folklorico Nacional de Mexico-Aztlan performs authentic traditional dance in full costume.

Did You Know?

Scattered ruins throughout the region tell the story of an ancient Mayan civilization that once occupied the area centuries ago, but Cancun wasn’t actually developed into a resort island until the 1960s. The desolate sliver of sand off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula was carved out of the jungle of the Quintana Roo region when demand for the resort town was placed on the Mexican government—eventually putting Cancun on the map of treasured destinations.
